Photo Software Links Help & Advice

Okay it`s the weekend and I am not about so I have done this in advance.

The colour alphabet theme is on hold for two whole days.
Today I am going to `advise` about photos. Note that I`ve marked the advise word mainly because I am rubbish at photos. It`s so time consuming, you take about a million, okay a slight exaggeration, and then you put them on the computer and they are too dark, the colours don`t look right, you got in things you shouldn`t....... well I could go on and on with that except it`ll get boring.
Most of those apply to me.
If your photos are already brilliant and crystal clear then read no further. If you struggle with them then stay on the page.

If you look around on many of the big sites, Etsy, Wow Thank You and Folksy, you will see quite a few bad product photos that are dark or out of focus, too big, too small etc etc. Very often they are new sellers, or people who haven`t got past the new seller stage, ie: they are still waiting for it all to happen a year or two down the line.
That probably sounds rather harsh but unfortunately it`s true. I know because mine were awful and I am still working through all my pics, taking more, editing etc and it takes forever.
A customer has only those photos to go on. It doesn`t matter how cheap you make that item, without good pictures from every angle that show clearly what is being sold, they rarely buy. You do also need a good description and title but it`s the photo that gets seen first.
I think many are like I was when starting out. You think all you have to do is fill the shop and that`s it. You take the pics and write basic descriptions without looking at what other shops are like. Then begins the massive learning curve, especially if you want to turn that hobby into a business.

I got the idea for this blog after seeing these links on a forum for the mentor month and I thought I would share them.
As crafter`s, until we are well established, we don`t have a lot of money to spare on trying different photo editing software. All of these are free and many with the option to upgrade for premium tools.
This is from Mooshpie If you don't have photoshop then try Gimp out. It's a great little design software package that allows you to edit your photos!

www.gimp.org/

From Ailsa of Bramalfie Beads etc.
I use Fotofuze.com to get a nice crisp background on all my photos and edit them in Picasa - Google's free software.

From Kes of Kestrel of the Sea. I use a free online photo editing tool at www.BeFunky.com. It has lots of interesting effects (e.g. to look like old photos) and you can also upload your altered photo to their site which means more people will see it...

From Elizabeth of EANJewellery.
I can also recommend Picassa for storing and editing photos. It's very easy to use and is FREE. The features I use the most are lightening, highlighting and neutralising the background of photos
picasa.google.co.uk

These links and advice from Dollydripp
I use Photoshop for all my image editing but there is Photoshop Express which is online and free. It has some of the basic Photoshop editing tools.

www.photoshop.com/tools/expresseditor?wf=editor

I've also discovered one called Fotor which is online and free.

www.fotor.com/

If you use software like Photoshop look for an adjustment or tool called 'curves', it's my favourite for instantly brightening dark images! It's not always available on the free software but Fotor has it, it's like magic!

Ribbet and Picture Monkey are great for creating fun images with filters, stickers and text. I use them a lot for Facebook and Instagram images.
Ribbet is free and if you sign up you get access to the premium tools. There's no charge for this.
www.ribbet.com/

Picture Monkey is mostly free but you have to subscribe and pay for some of the premium tools.
www.picmonkey.com/

This link and helpful hints and advice comes from Ellie of Hunted & Stuffed.
Photoshop is the industry standard but if you don't have a few thousand quid to splash on it then try Pixlr.com

It's free and seems to have a lot of photoshop style tools.

Open your image and select the crop tool icon (top left in the long skinny tool box on your left). Up above in the grey box next to 'constraint' select aspect ration, 1 and 1 is fine, then drag the cursor over your image to achieve a square crop.

Another useful tool is 'brightness/ contrast' which you'll find in the top black bar in the drop down menu under 'adjustment'. A simple way to brighten your photos up if they are a little dark. Or further down the same drop down menu is 'exposure' which will do a similar thing.

If you want to save different versions of your image, just give them different names. You could start with the same source image and save a version of each thing you do like this. "SAVE AS" image-1, image-2, image-brigher, or whatever you choose to call them. Save each separately to give yourself more options. You can review later and choose your favourites to upload.

Don't feel overwhelmed with photography. Good photos are achievable even with basic equipment or even iphones etc. When shooting, be aware of natural light, it's a fallacy that bright sunny days give the best photos, bright sun = harsh shadows! An overcast day or shooting in the shade will produce less harsh shadow and contrast and help you get that lovely soft daylight look.
Also leave lots of room around your subject when composing your shot so you have room to crop later (square format for Etsy). It's easier to shoot a lot at once and then edit later than to shoot a few, have them nor work out, then have to re-shoot some more again.

Well I think that gives you plenty to go on with.
Try them out and see which one works best for you. The right one can make a big difference in time as well as picture quality.

As there is a lot here and each will take time I am going to leave this here on the front page for two days, Saturday and Sunday.

If you liked this post and found it useful please share to help others, thank you.

A ditty for you, some light relief after the hard work.

You took your pics, thought they were fine
but many of them were just like mine.
Doesn`t matter they`re a bit dark,
I`m only doing this for a lark.
It`s just a hobby I love to do
making exclusive things for you.
Then you start to widen the range
now you realise it all has to change.
The stock is growing at an amazing rate
and not very much has sold to date.
Now suddenly you need to know much more
just to get those creations out the door.
What happened to the hobby that was fun?
Now it seems the work is never done.
Time to have good pics and get clever
make sure that you learn whatever
it takes to get everything right
and then the future will be bright.
You`ll get back to doing what you love best
as well as managing to do all the rest!!

Magenta & Maroon #Etsy

Still with the colour alphabet today, although it won`t be here over the weekend.
Over the weekend there will be a post about photographs with links and advice to help you improve them to display your items at their best and hopefully improve sales.

Back to today. It`s M today as you know and I have gone for Magenta and Maroon. Sounds a strange pairing I know but it looks okay and we have two days in a row that are green free. Strange really considering the range of colours available nowadays that I ended up with a run of greens. Still, a bit further down the line it could be predominantly another colour.

Yesterday we actually had some rain, a real downpour. Did`nt last that long, maybe an hour on and off and for a short time the air felt fresher. Once the sun came out it all dried very rapidly. It might be my imagination but I think the grass looks a bit greener again. It was very brown looking.
As usual, to see a bigger picture or a description, just click on the item to view it in the shop.
ENJOY!!!

A row of diamonds hanging form the fence
they`ll be gone a few hours hence.
The plants reaching up, with a thirst
they`ll drink till they`re ready to burst.
Shiny roofs and slick pavement
the rain is certainly heaven sent
washing away the dirt and dust
watering the plants, that`s a must.
A fresher feeling to the air
as I walk out without a care.
Not too long and here comes the sun
already the rain showers are done.
It`s heating up the ground
and steam is rising all around.
Rapidly drying everything everywhere,
amazing, I can only stop and stare.
We`re more used to wet that goes on
rather than this, appearing then gone!!

Khaki #Etsy

As you can see we have a green yet again for the colour alphabet theme. How many shades are there for goodness sake? Good job it`s L next at least that will bring a little variety.
So having tried the big three to try and keep some variety going we are back to Etsy as neither the other two had much at all.
I must say I am seeing khaki in a whole new light. Who knew I would discover so many gorgeous things? I expected it to be quite dull but it`s not. Yay!!
Yesterday, in spite of the forecast, we didn`t have any thunder storms or rain. It was however very grey all day apart from late morning when it looked as though, briefly, it might become sunny.
I took advantage of the lack of sun and decided to clean the trampoline. It needed a good scrub and took quite a while and despite the lack of sun I got very hot. Sheer stubbornness kept me at it until it was done. Before that I had to sew new elastic onto the safety netting where it attaches to the poles of which there are six. Three had come away and I fixed two of them a few days ago, so luckily today`s was the last one, for a while at least. Glad those jobs are done with the school summer holidays looming.
I was cutting it a bit fine as they finish school today.
As usual, to see a bigger picture or a description, just click on the item to view it in the shop.
ENJOY!!!

Some say they had a thunderstorm
and this one was far from the norm.
Scaring animals with a loud crash
wondering at what sounds like a smash.
Lightening forking the sky overhead,
everyone wishing they were still in bed.
Jumping startled, at every extra loud sound
seems like something big hitting the ground.
A crackling feeling in the air
making us wonder how we`ll fare.
when it`s building the air is close
making us headachy, feeling morose.
When it`s over the air is lighter
and suddenly all are much brighter.
Feeling fresher, cooler and fine
for storms though, no one will pine!!

Jasmine & Jade #Etsy

As you can see we have reached the lofty heights of J today in the colour alphabet.
Is it me or is there more green than anything else in all these colours. And yes today we have green again in the form of jade green but we also have jasmine which I have interpreted as yellow. Some schools of thought say it is white or even a pale green but I have gone with the majority and used jasmine yellow.
Hope you enjoy my choices.
Yesterday I was working on the mentor month stuff. I`d done and redone all my titles and tags but it hadn`t helped views much which I mentioned on the team forum. I got some great feedback and suggestions which I immediately started to put into practice. I got one whole section done and there are a few more to go now. I do seem to like to make myself work.
In the long run though it should pay off with sales, so fingers crossed.

I have a sales coupon for you today from the Piixl Candle Company: BURNING10 will give you 10% off in this shop.

As usual, to see a bigger picture or a description, just click on the item to view it in the shop.
ENJOY!!!

The sun is out, the sky is blue
and all is well in my world view.
A gentle breeze tries to cool
but it`s not managing to fool
anyone at all, least of all me
because I`m quite hot you see.
An ice cold drink and I`m fine
I`ll have a lolly, down the line.
Revelling in the bright day
loving it more than words can say.
It`s certainly better late than never
that Mother Nature finally got clever
and finally got the season going
and now summer is really flowing.
Better than it`s been for many a year
we suffered much for it, that is clear.

Indigo #Etsy

Not a lot of choice for today`s alphabet in colour blog. It`s indigo or indigo and thats it. I toddled along to all three sites to see which one was going to be on display today. I have to say it was an easy choice. Etsy it is. The only one with a good selection of creations in indigo.
It was dull and grey most of the day yesterday. Got out, finally, early evening. Was nice to see some blue sky again. Hopefully today we`ll be back to full sunshine.
I had a busy morning doing .... wait for it ...... yep, housework. I`m sure there should be a law against it. There`s always something that`s better and more fun to do, but I did get on with it. Then my eldest daughter called and suggested we go for a carvery which we thought was an excellent idea. Then they all came back for a while and I got back to work after they had gone.
That work was taking about a million photos .... although that could be a slight exaggeration. In the morning in between houseworking I was busy putting together some new inspirational artwork and printing it off, hence the pics. There were a lot as I had also done some the night before too.
As usual, to see a bigger picture or a description, just click on the item to view it in the shop.
ENJOY!!!

Grey, grey and still more grey
that`s mostly what we had yesterday.
Most other places, they had sun
I began to wonder what I`d done.
Was Mother Nature picking on me?
Could have been my fault you see.
I cleaned patio table and each chair
they were quite grubby to be fair.
Parasol went up in fine style
I sat in the shade with a smile.
My ice cream was melting fast
it was okay it wouldn`t last
long enough to start to drip
or even to stick to my lip.
That was the last day of sun we had
and it made me feel quite bad
because just maybe, it was me
who brought all the cloud you see!!!
